Space, Time and Beauty at Piacenza

A good way of reaching global scale in architecture and urban planning is by designing in one of the most beautiful towns in the world, Piacenza, Italy.

The universality embedded by definition in beauty assures that general interest will be automatically involved in all our reflexions. Cheers for the last week at OC International Workshop.

Global Inspiration

An excellent example of a delicate attention to the context while satisfying modern-global requirements is the new building of Pei for the Lombardy Region in Milan (under construction). It is undeniable the benefits of Pei's experience at the Hancock Tower (1976): the new complex is much better integrated to its immediate context.

It could not be a better heir of the Ponti's Pirelli (1958), which is the building where the Lombardy Region is right now, and it is the one that inspired Mitjans' Banco Atlantico (1969) in Barcelona. Certainly, a chain of global inspiration.

Open City International Summer School

In the birth town of Giorgio Armani, there is going to take place the Open City International Summer School of the Politecnico di Milano.

During three weeks, 6-23 September, this design workshop will gather together people from all over the world to work on public space, a specially important theme in the era of globalization. It will be a good occasion to test the validity of our five years old proposal of the Welfare Space.

PhD in Architectural Design

Talking about architectural design is a big challenge. To do it in Milan, at the Politecnico, it's a privilege.

Gillo Dorfles: cien años os contemplan

Dorfles ha hablado. Y lo ha hecho alto y claro para afirmar (confirmar) que Ernesto Rogers era tan proyectista como teórico, las dos cosas al tiempo.

Coincidiendo con el nacimiento de Rogers (este año cumpliría cien años, los que va a cumplir Dorfles el que viene), el crítico de arte con más autoridad en Italia y su amigo de la infancia dice en un artículo en el Corriere della Sera que el libro de Eugenia López Reus llena "una laguna verdaderamente incomprensible".

Esa laguna, que según Dorfles llena el libro a base de "sutileza", es, en mi opinión, resultado de la dificultad de reconocer en otros la capacidad de hacer y pensar al mismo tiempo, de hacer literatura con las palabras y arquitectura con la construcción: algo de eso le pasaba a Wright con Le Corbusier.

En efecto, escribir y diseñar suelen convertirse en pecado cuando es un mismo arquitecto el que ejerce ambas habilidades. La kantiana autonomía entre pensar y actuar se convierte en intolerancia cuando el profesional y el crítico se obsesionan en defender la pureza de sus ámbitos respectivos. Lo que sucede es que la vida mezcla las pretendidas purezas, las cuales, por cierto, son en el kantismo sólo legalidades subjetivas no constituciones objetivas. En los textos del excelente congreso que acaba de terminar en el Politécnico de Milán-Bovisa se recogerán muchos de estos matices que la celebración ha permitido sacar a la luz.

Mientras tanto, hay que agradecerle a Dorfles que siga defendiendo tan rotundamente la posibilidad de una subjetividad integrada a través de lo artístico. ¡Salve Maestro!

Eugenia López Reus Lecture at Cornell

Cornell University has a program in Rome since 20 years ago (the same length of time LIPAU was on in Bergamo before becoming Dr.PAU). In that program Eugenia is going to give a lecture on the role of memory in architectural design. It is going to be in November.

PhD Summer Course Bergamo 2008

The IE School of Architecture has been invited to the PhD Summer Course of the Politecnico di Milano in Bergamo. The Dean and the Associate Dean of the faculty, Professor Javier Quintana de Uña and José María de Churtichaga, along with professors Miguel Jaime and Eugenia López Reus, will be part of the jury of the final review. This year the theme is the High-rise Buildings and Landscape. The course will take place from the 7th to 19th of July 2008.

LIPAU 2008

L´ECO DI BERGAMO 24/07/06

El curso de verano del LIPAU (Laboratorio Internacional de Proyectos de Arquitectura y Urbanismo) se ha reabierto. Después de la interrupción del año pasado continúa la tradición del sumer workshop que lleva realizándose 20 años consecutivos en la ciudad de Bérgamo. Se trata de un LIPAU renovado pues se enmarca en el programa de doctorado del Politécnico de Milán y al que pueden asistir alumnos de 4º y 5º cursos y recién graduados de universidades extranjeras. Nuestra escuela tiene una larga tradición en este competitivo taller internacional de proyectos ya que nuestros alumnos han ganado premios y menciones en los últimos años: en la foto aparecen Nelson Bardon, Hector Gordaliza ganadores del primer Premio Bergamo di Arquitectura 2006 y Javier Fernandez Viadas y Bernardo Llovet ganadores de la Menzione di Merito junto al alcalde de la ciudad y a Sergio Crotti, Catedrático de proyectos del Politécnico de Milano y fundador del LIPAU. Los profesores de la IE School of Architecture Miguel Jaime y Eugenia López Reus, vinculados al LIPAU desde hace 19 años como profesores invitados, tutores, conferenciantes y miembros del jurado y de la comisión didáctica, volverán a participar en esta nueva etapa del laboratorio internacional.
