Former student, Architec Sonia Álvarez, from R3 Arquitectura, has published on the Web this design done by her at our 2007 LAR Workshop at IE University. I agree with Sonia that this two weeks work is one of those works that resists the pass of time.

DESCRIPCIÓN DEL EJERCICIO:
La definición más elemental de arquitectura siempre incluirá a la luz. Por su parte, la luz cenital es la relación entre la luz y el espacio más primaria, ya que naturalmente la luz (del sol, la luna, las estrellas) viene desde arriba. En el presente ejercicio se pide iluminar cenital y naturalmente un espacio de usos múltiples de 40,00 m X 12,00 m de planta y de 12,00m de alto, con su cara más corta orientada a norte. La altura libre resultante después de cubrirlo influirá directamente en la versatilidad del espacio, como es lógico.

Collaborative Education or Eco Buddhism?

The RAL (Reflexive Architecture Laboratory) is a design studio like any other but collaborative oriented. The result is that for the first time students start talking about ethics, tolerance, objectiveness in judgement, etc. Design itself has been even better than before at the RAL. It is incredible that this pedagogic technique has been ingnored for so long. The Chronicle ofHigher Education puts it this way:

Distributed and collaborative learning, with its emphasis on mindfulness, attunement to others, nonjudgmental interactions, acknowledgment of each person's unique contributions, and recognition of the importance of deep participation, can't help but foster critical thinking skills and greater empathic engagement. In that sense, collaborative learning transforms the classroom into a laboratory for empathic expression, which, in turn, enriches the educational process.

The article is by Jeremy Rifkin, the same author of The Empathic Civilization (this links to a good article extracted from the book) . I have no doubt about the effectiveness of collaborative applied to architectural education. In a wider political scope I am not so sure. John Gray, for example, thinks Rifkin's empathy becomes naive when it gets too green.

By the way, Rifkin says it was "Jane" Abercrombie at the University College London Hospitals who started this kind of education in 1950's. What about Vigotsky then?

Teaching creativity

Creativity is a mystery. How to teach something that is a mystery? Business people have their idea, like in this Stanford's video. The Institute of Creativity and Educational Innovation, University of Valencia has a more artistic idea: it relates perception to action. The latter is closer to the atypical action that produces new perceptions which is art. By the way, art and business is the theme of Italo Calvino's novel Building Speculation written in 1957. It tells the story of a writer that fails in becoming a business man. On the other hand, much later, the same Calvino wrote Six Memos for the Next Millennium which is certainly one of the best creative clues for the future.

At the Reflexive Architecture Laboratory (check the LAR tag) we did the other way round: after doing we started theorizing. Still it looks that Reflexiveness is at the centre of creativity.

Reflexive Architecture Laboratory (RAL), a paper related to the design studios of professors Miguel Jaime and Eugenia Lopez Reus, is going to be presented at an international congress sponsored by the Spanish Universities of Vigo, Santiago de Compostela and A Coruña. The I Congress of University Teaching is going to take place from the 2^nd to the 4^th of June in the beautiful city of Vigo, and it will gather together experts from various countries that are trying to build the European Space for Higher Education.

The RAL combines the reflexive theory of architectural creative process (JAIME, 2000), the importance of context in innovation (LOPEZ REUS, 2002) and modern pedagogical techniques that improve creativity, commitment and excellence.

The RAL has been assessed by the Quality Agency of Castilla León (2005-2008), Benchmarking meetings (2008), and, which is more important for the reflexive philosophy of the RAL, has been highly appreciated by the users of the laboratory, the students, in the surveys (2005-2009). The Universidad Pontificia de Salamanca is about to publish the paper “Las sesiones ECCC en el LAR”, one of the pedagogical techniques of the RAL.

La noticia que sigue es sobre lo que hacemos en clase. De hecho la "buena práctica" que vamos a presentar a Salamanca la semana que viene son las sesiones críticas en grupos. El nombre técnico son Sesiones ECCC (evaluación y construcción del conocimiento compartido). Nadie diría que ese es el nombre de algo tan divertido y productivo como han sido nuestras sesiones de crítica por grupos. El texto de abajo salióen la web de la IE Universidad .

Los profesores de la IE School of Architecture Miguel Jaime y Eugenia López Reus presentan una propuesta novedosa sobre cómo enseñar proyectos arquitectónicos en la Universidad Pontificia de Salamanca los días 3 y 4 de julio.

El Laboratorio de Arquitectura Reflexiva (LAR) es el resultado de una combinación de prácticas creativas y pedagógicas aplicadas a la enseñanza de proyectos arquitectónicos que ambos profesores ponen en práctica en sus clases de la IE Universidad. En el marco de las I Jornadas de Intercambio de Buenas Prácticas Docentes esta innovadora propuesta docente ha sido seleccionada para su publicación por parte de la Agencia de la Calidad del Sistema Universitario de Castilla y León.

El LAR ha ido surgiendo progresivamente. Durante los últimos 8 años se han incorporado al tradicional ejercicio de proyectos, el cual generalmente consiste en la resolución de una ficción de encargo profesional, ciertas aplicaciones distintivas como son: la teorización sobre lo que ocurre cuando diseñamos (Jaime, 2000), la revalorización del lugar y la historia en el proyecto arquitectónico contemporáneo (López Reus, 2002) y técnicas de investigación y pedagógicas adaptadas especialmente a la asignatura de proyectos arquitectónicos. La experiencia de el LAR es deudora del cambio de paradigma educativo que la construcción del espacio común europeo propicia en nuestro sistema universitario.

LIPAU 2008

L´ECO DI BERGAMO 24/07/06

El curso de verano del LIPAU (Laboratorio Internacional de Proyectos de Arquitectura y Urbanismo) se ha reabierto. Después de la interrupción del año pasado continúa la tradición del sumer workshop que lleva realizándose 20 años consecutivos en la ciudad de Bérgamo. Se trata de un LIPAU renovado pues se enmarca en el programa de doctorado del Politécnico de Milán y al que pueden asistir alumnos de 4º y 5º cursos y recién graduados de universidades extranjeras. Nuestra escuela tiene una larga tradición en este competitivo taller internacional de proyectos ya que nuestros alumnos han ganado premios y menciones en los últimos años: en la foto aparecen Nelson Bardon, Hector Gordaliza ganadores del primer Premio Bergamo di Arquitectura 2006 y Javier Fernandez Viadas y Bernardo Llovet ganadores de la Menzione di Merito junto al alcalde de la ciudad y a Sergio Crotti, Catedrático de proyectos del Politécnico de Milano y fundador del LIPAU. Los profesores de la IE School of Architecture Miguel Jaime y Eugenia López Reus, vinculados al LIPAU desde hace 19 años como profesores invitados, tutores, conferenciantes y miembros del jurado y de la comisión didáctica, volverán a participar en esta nueva etapa del laboratorio internacional.
